My name is Elizabeth, and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2010, at the age of 30. Even though I was diagnosed under the best possible circumstances—before developing DKA and while I had both decent insurance and a steady income—the diagnosis rocked my world. Because I am both an obsessive researcher and a lover of projects, I decided to tackle this disease head-on by devouring all of the information on diabetes that I could find and by optimizing my treatment with diet, lifestyle, and insulin “best practices.”

Of all of the resources I had at my disposal, friends who also had diabetes may have been the greatest. My doctor and Certified Diabetes Educators were wonderful and taught me how to treat my disease, but it was my diabetic friends (both online and IRL) who taught me how to live with my disease. Now that I am among the veteran ranks, it is my goal to return the favor by becoming the same kind of resource for others.
